The National Museum - 3rd Time's a Charm

Friday, February 24, 2017

It has been so rainy here we feel like we're in Seattle.  It can rain non-stop for hours.  It sounds beautiful on the roof, but is no fun to walk in.  So Thursday was a home day.  We tidied up the flat and I took pictures, so I'll try to get those posted.

Friday we just had to get out, so when it let up at lunchtime, we braved it and left the flat.  Down the street from us is an authentic Lithuanian restaurant.  We were told it is the best in town, so we decided to try it.  One side of the restaurant was very fancy, so we opted for the more cafe style, which was just our style.

We love the walk to the restaurant, just outside our courtyard.

The less fancy side of Allure.

This is one of the most authentic Lithuanian dishes of the 20th century - Zeppelins.  It is a pastry-like outside made of potatoes filled with ground pork.  I think if they baked or fried it, it would probably be pretty good.  Boiled makes it just a little too mushy.  But it was worth a try, even though it took 45 minutes for them to make it. Much of the other menu items included either potatoes or cabbage or both.

Our destination for the day: the National Museum.  It's the main museum of Lithuania located in what was once the Grand Duke's Palace.  The building has been renovated to preserve it, but they have kept the old palace wall exposed in the basement.  The museum is dedicated to telling the history of Lithuania.  I can follow the history pretty well at the beginning, but then it begins to mix in so much with Poland and other surrounding countries that I get more confused because I'm just not well versed in Eastern European history.

The courtyard and renovated Palace of the Grand Duke.

Exposed walls, foundations and walkways of buildings dating back to the 13th century that makes up the oldest settlements in Vilnius.

This model shows what exists today in color with what existed previously in white styrofoam.

... and Sarah with the Man in Steel.

Selfie in the tower

The tower seen in the picture above is where we climbed to to see a 360 view.  This is facing north into the more modern part of Vilnius.

And here we're facing south back towards the center of Old Town and our flat.

The Grand Duke's throne with a European fireplace in the corner.

 Royal crowns.

Although we visited this museum twice last year, we very much enjoyed showing it to Sarah this year.  There was one addition to the museum this year - a 3D virtual reality headset.  Through it you could see the palace being built and what it may have looked like here before it became civilized.  It was a fun visual.

On our way home, we passed an Italian restaurant Sarah and I wanted to try.  Tyson was over-ready for bed (it being 6 pm) and Jacob was just ready to be home, so they ditched us.  However, Adam was just leaving the office, so he met us there.

We love taking our hats off and always having hat-hair.

We enjoy our evenings when Adam is home.  This past week we've spent many nights watching audition videos.  They are working to fill out their cast, so we see what the casting agent has sent him for the day.  It's looking like they are going to assemble a really great group of actors from London and Germany.
